Willie Phoenix

May 20, 2023
Music from 7 to 10 PM
Whether he’s playing haunting blues, straight forward rock, garage band noise or psychedelic fusion – Willie Phoenix delivers. Willie’s career has spanned decades – and so has his passion – never stopping, never failing to deliver jaw-dropping performances with an undeniable edge.
Born in Camden Alabama, Willie says he entered the world “wrapped in a burning southern flag” – referencing his love for the blues. Growing up, he listened to all of the greats. They were all there on the 78/45 rpm records played on his family’s Magnavox record player: Muddy Waters, Lightening Hopkins, Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooker and country greats Hank Williams, Buck Owens and Jerry Reed. Willie remembers thinking the guitars, harmonicas and voices possessed the same echoing, lonely sound as the midnight trains that rumbled past his Marion, Ohio home. It was there, in Marion, where he grew up, went to school and cut his teeth on early British invasion blues and rock n’ roll.
Willie has never looked back. He learned to play the blues from his father, bluesman Willie James Creagh Sr. who played with big names like Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Willie’s godfather). Willie says, “I had a certain knack for writing songs. I started playing guitar, grabbed a few of my mates, formed a band and made a lot of wonderful noise.” Willie has worked clubs and concert halls from Toronto Canada straight to the west coast neon lights of Hollywood. He’s performed with many greats, including Muddy Waters, BB King, rock n’ roll’s Ramones and The Talking Heads – to name only a few.
A prolific songwriter, Willie released four albums in 2021: Heavy Bubblegum (2021), 3 Chords, Maybe 4 (2021) Poster Noise (2021) and Bomb Shelter 13 (2021). Other recent works include This Ain’t 1968 (2020), Backstage Rain (2019), Garage Blues Band (2017), Blues My Soul (2016) and Captain Psychedelic (2015), all released through 1978 Records.
Though he’s a very humble guy, if you’re lucky you might get Willie to tell you about how the City of Columbus honored “the legendary rock god Willie Phoenix” by renaming 16th and High Street “Willie Phoenix Way” (October, 2020) or about being inducted into the 2022 Columbus Blues Alliance Hall of Fame (October 2022).
When not on the road, Willie’s usually cutting sides at Eastman Studios. You can probably find Willie and his band (Steven Day Carter on drums and Chuck Birchfield on bass) performing into the wee hours of the morning somewhere in town or at Eldorado’s – their favorite underground juke joint in the Graceland district of Columbus.
Willie once told a friend, “Rock n’ roll has saved me from the blues of silence.” Long live rock n’ roll!

Donna Mogavero and & Her Mighty Band

July 22, 2023

Music from 7 to 10 PM

The jewel singer-songwriter of Ohio, Donna Mogavero, knows how to write a song. If you don’t want to take our word, take it from The Greater Columbus Music Awards: in 1994, they awarded her with “Outstanding Acoustic Solo Performance,” “Outstanding Folk Singer Vocalist,” “Outstanding Rock Singer Vocalist,” and “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition.”
The Clash claimed London, The Strokes captured New York City, but Columbus, Ohio, belongs to Donna Mogavero. She hit all the musician milestones along the way, of course – including a make-or-break trip to LA (working as a barista for Michael Jackson’s chef) and a few months on the Nashville circuit – but the pull of Ohio’s community was just too strong to let go of. She raised her family here, and she wrote songs for the city here.
After all these years, while many Columbus musicians diversified their work portfolio (aka getting a day job), Donna’s resolution to keep singing never lost its momentum. She’s still releasing music, performing, and being discovered by a new generation of listeners with no agenda other than connecting to that one person in the crowd. After all, “all you need is the lovely sound of one person clapping.”

Deuce ‘n a Quarter with Blues Cowboys

August 5, 2023

Music from 7 to 10 PM

As the name suggests, Deuce ‘n a Quarter is a hard driving blues machine fronted by the powerful voice and wailing harmonica of Brian Peters. The band’s forte is its orginal music, where you’ll hear the influence and respect paid to many blues legends.
With Jeffrey Allen’s masterful guitar work, John Sipher’s melodic touch on keys, Martin O. Brown’s bass groove and the hypnotic pocket of Andre Scott on drums it’s easy to connect to their heartfelt delivery of interesting lyrics.
Take a joyride with Deuce ‘n a Quarter as they blend talent and feelings to create a modern yet classic blues vibe!
Why the name?
In 1959 the top of the line Buick was the new Electra. Borrowing from the styling’s of the Cadillac and the Oldsmobile, with chromed grill and fins, this car measured in at 225 inches or a “deuce ‘n a quarter”.
With its power and smooth ride the deuce ‘n a quarter quickly became an American classic. Although it was built for comfort not speed, when you dressed one up it became an affordable luxury automobile for the working man “the poor man’s Cadallic”!
Just like the automobile, the band Deuce ‘n a Quarter is built for comfort not speed. But make no mistake, when they perform their original music paired with classic American blues, they are bound to get you moving. Through an authentic connection with their audience and listeners, this band is becoming another American classic. The name alone will take you to a good place.

Long Tall Deb and Colin John

October 7, 2023

Music from 7 to 10 PM

Like many blues and soul vocalists of note, Deb Landolt cultivated her soul/gospel honey-dipped voice in church as a child. Her debut “Raise Your Hands” gained heavy rotation on Sirius/XM’s“Bluesville” and garnered attention both for her vocal dynamics and songwriting: owing a lot to her Texas/Mexico border roots.
Transpacific Bluesman Colin John received his early touring miles with Teeny Hodges, Little Mike and The Tornadoes, Henry Grey, Pinetop Perkins, Michael Hill, Hubert Sumlin, Phil Guy, Big Jack Johnson, and Gary Brooker of Procol Harum.
Their one-of-a-kind sound incorporates a solid bedrock of blues and soul sensibilities cross-pollinated with their respective deep roots in Texas and Hawai’i and topped with world roots influences gleaned from their travels throughout the world.
Together, Long Tall Deb & Colin John have performed across Asia, Europe, North America and the Pacific and continue to license their songs in TV and film. Past credits include TNT’s “Good Behavior” Season 1 pilot and indie film “Contrast”.
“Long Tall Deb raises attitude to a new latitude. Her songs cook with more smoke and sauce than all of Memphis, and her soul will break your back. Colin John’s guitar flogs you with a cotton branch ’til you bleed honey.
Together they ride a no-brakes rhythm section locomotive to a time when the rooms were red, the music was black and the untold tales waited patiently for the coming of the voice worthy of the telling. Get ready. Here they come.”
— TERRY ABRAHAMSON, IN THE BELLY OF THE BLUES
